- About Straus
- The first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States.
- Our certified organic dairy products are Non-GMO Project Verified, certified kosher, and gluten-free. The cows are never treated with hormones or antibiotics. They graze on pesticide-free organic pastures during good weather and are given 100% organically grown supplemented feeds.
The cows graze on sweet grasses in the unique, coastal climate of Western Marin and Sonoma Counties in Northern California. This grazing environment is reflected in the rich and unique flavor of Straus’ organic milk, organic cream, and all of our organic dairy products.
- Our premium organic milk is where nutritional benefits meet environmental stewardship for a rich, sweet, and well-rounded taste. Whether it’s for cereal, coffee or tea, or on its own in a cold glass of goodness, it’s milk you can rely on for your daily dairy needs.
Straus Organic Milk is high in quality protein, deemed as a good source of a complete protein – one that contains all nine of the essential amino acids our body needs and can’t make on its own. Straus Organic Milk is an excellent source of calcium and includes Vitamin A and Zinc – two nutrients that are beneficial for normal immune function. Our milk contains no antibiotics, growth hormones, GMOs or pesticides, either. All of this with a rich, smooth, satisfying taste.
Never ultra-pasteurized, crafted with pure, simple ingredients, and minimally processed for the best taste, we believe nature always knows best which is why the cream rises to the top of our glass bottles of organic milk. Literally.
With the increase in non-dairy alternatives and synthetic dairy proteins, it’s important to note that plant-based beverages often contain added sugars to make them taste better and utilize gums, thickeners, and stabilizers to create the desired consistency, while Straus Organic Milk does none of this.
- Frequently Asked Questions
- What should I do with the cream on top of my milk?
As milk settles, the cream layer forms in the neck of the glass bottle. This is normal. Some people remove this cream entirely with a spoon and use it in their coffee, spread on a piece of bread, or for cooking. If you’d prefer that the cream redistribute before using, push the cream layer back into the milk and shake the bottle — just make sure you keep your hand firmly over the lid!
- Why is there cream on top of my milk?
A cow produces whole milk with two components: nonfat milk and cream. Homogenization is an emulsification process that distributes fat throughout milk. Non-homogenized milk has cream that naturally rises to the top and forms a “plug” in the neck of a glass bottle or milk jug. The cream-top layer can take several days to form. One of Straus Family Creamery’s founding principles is minimal processing. All products are pasteurized, and our cream-top milk sold in stores is not homogenized, leaving it as close as possible to its natural state.
- Is your milk homogenized?
We do not homogenize our milk, leaving the milk as close as possible to its natural state and allowing the cream to rise to the top. You will notice the cream-top in our glass-bottled milk. The only exceptions are our organic half & half, chocolate milk, Barista® Milk, and eggnog products, which are homogenized.
- What breed of cows are on the dairy farms, and do you test the milk for A1/A2?
Organic milk supplied to Straus Family Creamery comes from several breeds of cows, including Jersey, Holstein, and Jersey-Holstein cross breeds. Milk from each farm is blended and used in all products. We do not currently test for or plan to test for A1 or A2 proteins in the cows’ milk supplied to us by the certified organic dairy farms with whom we partner. That said, our research and development team continue to monitor ongoing scientific research on the potential benefits of A1 and A2 proteins.
- For more than 30 years, the Straus Family Creamery name has been synonymous with premium organic dairy and a commitment to sustainable practices.
